I have a Tamrac Adventure 9 backpack which is great for fitting lots of gear in, but I'm finding it a little too heavy and cumbersome for quick little trips or macro shooting.

I'm thinking about getting a Crumpler 5MDH, 6MDH, or 7MDH. Suspect the 5MDH would be too small, and the 7MDH bigger than I want.

Pretty soon I want to get the MPE-65 and MT-24EX combo, and want to make sure that fits. I am thinking I would use the following combinations in this bag:

- 30D, 100mm macro, 430EX, flash bracket (external link), Kenko tubes, off-shoe chord; or
- 30D, 17-55+hood, 430EX, 100-400+hood or 70-200 2.8IS+hood; or
- 30D, 100mm macro, Kenko tubes, MPE-65, MT-24EX

Would they fit in 6MDH? Would there be room for bits and pieces like wallet, keys, filter pouch, remote shutter etc? Or would it be full to the brim?

Troy, i see that you used to have the 24-70 and since that's the only lens that we both have or have had...I'll compare the "packed" size of the MT-24 to the fabulous brick w/ hood reversed. It comes w/ it's own case so you can always put it in a side pocket or clip it the outside of the bag if you're overflowing

Thanks Tim. So the other combinations will fit too? I thought they should based on the photos of the bag I've seen.

Not sure Troy, I don't own the 6 MDH. I like the modular belt/harness systems because it's just more convenient for me.

I see. Didn't notice what bag you use in your gear list.

So for the other lurkers - anything to add? :)

Troy, the Crumpler store in Adelaide St are very good. Take your gear in and pack it into a 6MDH and a 7MDH and see what suits you better.

That said, I have a 6MDH and a MP-E65 but a MR14 rather than a MR-24. I prefer to carry the MR-14 in my ThinkTank Change Up (Beltpack/Shoulder Bag) because i can slip the ring part into another section of the bag for protection.

- 30D, 100mm macro, 430EX, flash bracket, Kenko tubes, off-shoe chord; or

yes

- 30D, 17-55+hood, 430EX, 100-400+hood or 70-200 2.8IS+hood;

or yes, just....

- 30D, 100mm macro, Kenko tubes, MPE-65, MT-24EX

maybe without the tubes.

The hard bit is trying to place the heads of the MR-24 so they are reasonably protected.

A gripped 30D makes it a little hard to close the top but it can be done.

i would say they should fit.
in mine i have the body attached to a 100mm macro in the middle compartment. In one side i have a 430EX with off shoe cord and a rocket blower. and the other side can fit a 70-200 or 2 smaller lenses.
I'm unsure about your 2nd combo, you may be able to pack it just right.

I tried to write my signature, but my pen ran out and I put a big scratch on my monitor

Thanks Greg. I was going to do as you suggested and take gear in to test it, but bit hard with the MPE-65 and MT-24EX since I don't have them yet :) Thought I'd float the ideas here first.

Thanks to you also Red Dot.
