I suspect that it isn't the exposure compensation, those images look more than 2/3 stop underexposed.
Going by the sunny 16 rule (it looks sunny in the pics) using 1/2000 second with 100 ISO would need an aperture of f3.5 which would suggest that the result at f5.6 is 1 1/3 stops underexposed, which seems about right.
So, either the lens just couldn't open up enough (max aperture at f5.6) or you suffered a combination of faulty metering and the exposure compensation.
This could explain the first shot as the silver helmet seems to be reflecting a lot of light which could have caused your meter to underexpose a little, add that to the EC of -2/3 and that could be the problem.
The second shot doesn't seem to have such a bright reflection, although the white shirt may have been an issue it seems to have come out quite dark itself, suggesting that it isn't the cause. However, that shot isn't quite as dark as the first, so may have been mailnly the EC.
If it is down to the lens being wide open at f5.6, but you want a fast shutter speed then you need to raise ISO a couple of stops to 400.
