At home on my PC, I habitually use a little free program called CleanUp to get rid of temporary files and various junk that accumulates in day-to-day nerding. I believe there's a similar program called CCleaner, about which I've read good things.

At work I'm using a Mac, and I don't know anything about Mac maintenance.

Are there things I should be doing regularly to keep it running smoothly?

It's a G5 running 10.4, on which I'm using Creative Suite 3, and various other stuff.

I barely do any maintenance since mine doesn't really need it. It IS a Mac after all ;).

But, OnyX is the best program for your Mac, plus it's free!

Download version 1.8.5.

Other programs I have are 'Internet Cleaning' and 'Spring Cleaning' by SmithMicro, I rarely use them, but can be useful. http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/ (external link)

The file system maintains itself realtime as you open, delete and move files so de-fragging is not necessary. Otherwise runs Onyx as above poster said, it cleans cache directories and allows you to force run the automated daily, weekly and monthly scripts.
