I was just curious. I recently bought the 1ds. Absolutely love it etc.

But had a querie. I cant find anywhere on here. The camera when set to RAW mode produces TIF files instead of CR2 (or any other non TIF files). As far as post processing is the TIF file the equivelent as a CR2 file on the 30D?

Just wondering if anyone can just fill me in on this.

TIF is lossless, so it should be comparable to a raw file. JPGs are compressed, so you lose detail. Raw file store more info, like what you shot it, etc. though.

The .TIF extension on the 1Ds parallels the file format of .CR2 on newer cameras, if I am not mistaken. The .TIF files are the 1Ds RAW files.

A beautiful camera BTW, enjoy.

While both Tifs and Raws are lossless, RAWs store far more information than TIFs, RAWs store sensor data (so you set white balance, recover overexposures, etc), TIFs store pixel data..

On the original 1D series cameras, the RAW files were saved with the .TIF extension but for all practical purposes, they are the same RAW files as the .CRW and .CR2 files. The data stored in these files are raw sensor data and need to be converted using the appropriate RAW converter programs just like .CRW and .CR2 files have to be. And if anybody has any doubts about this, just try opening one of these 1D .TIF files in a regular photo editing program as an image file. :)

Thank you. I assumed as much. They act just like them, just wanted to be sure I hadnt missed a setting. And thank you fword. It is a fantastic camera. Kind of like a step up from a point and shoot to a dSLR. You dont know how you lived with out it.
