I am going to the beach this week and I want to get a good filter for my lens. I really want the blue sky to show up. I have a Rebel XTi (already have a basic UV Filter) and I plan on using the lens on either my EF 50mm f/1.4 USM or EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens.

I would like to keep the filter brand CANON if possible and I do not want to spend more then $100 on this. Do you think it will really make a difference? If so, which do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Canon's filters are not good filters. They're reputedly made for Canon by Tiffen. Get a B+W MRC, Hoya S-HMC or Heliopan SH-PMC filter.

Ok...between Hoya and B+W...which do you suggest? And will it really make that big of a difference?

not really. Since you need it a short period of time. prepare to let BH charges you a lot vs get from hvstar.net at half the price.

I've standardized on B+W, but any of the three will be fine. It's largely individual preference among them.

It makes a big difference especially on wide angle lenses. I had an old CPL, not sure what brand, and on my 10-22 the corners were completely dark when shooting 10~15mm. My Hoya does not do this.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

No. The one at HVStar is a "slim" filter, without threads on the front for your lens cap (or another filter, not saying that's a good idea) to attach to. It also doesn't mention being multi-coated. For your lenses (50 f/1.4 and 55-250) you don't need a slim filter.

They say to ask, and they probably do . . . but if you want it this weekend HVStar isn't the way to go - they're in Hong Kong.

Jon, thank you so much...you have been a ton of help. One more question...will I have to manually rotate the filter when I take pics?

You might want to check out this web site 2filter.com, great prices and I believe they will ship overnight.
Plus you can call and talk to them, really nice people. Filters is all they sell.
This is where I bought mine, they had the best prices I could find, except for the counterfeit ones on Ebay, LOL.

I checked the price there on a B+W 58mm MRC Circular Polarizer made of brass so stronger than Hoya, $93.44 (This is the one I bought).

The only one more expensive than this is a B+W Kasseman whatever that is, I have no idea, jon can probably shed some light. At this point in time I am basically brand new to photography, but not new on getting good deals.

Good luck.

Yes, you will. Just rotate it until you see the effect you want.

Kaesemann polarizers are essentially sealed against moisture. Unless you're in very humid conditions, you probably don't need one. I don't have any, and haven't had a polarizer delaminate in more years than I care to admit to.

you all have good suggestions, but it is going to be hard to use a polarized filter for him/her...he/she is using lenses that have rotating front elements so he/she is going to have to manually focus and turn the filter...i personally think it is going to be very difficult
