Hello All,

Planning to buy a good tripod. Reading lhe Tripod FAQ's and doing a lot of research as I will be spending a good money on this tripod.

In the mean time, I was thinking of buying a basic tripod, even if that is heavy I don't mid carrying it around for few days.

Zeroed on the following Models. Please help me select the best one from the list below

Never heard of these guys.

What is your budget? what are you shooting? Which is more important, weight or low cost?

Bogen is a distributor and not a mfg brand. I presume you mean manfrotto. That said, manfrotto, Gitzo and Bogen are all owned by the same company (the Vitec Group (external link))

The most-often recommended tripod/head on the forum here is this combination (055XProB/488RC2) from Manfrotto (external link). The link here is from B&H in New York, but these are available all over the world.

I agree with Skip. I just bought the 055XPROB and 488RC2 last week and I couldn't be happier. Very steady combination with my 30D and 70-200 f/4!

What you haven't told us is what the max focal length you intend to use on this tripod is. That will have bearing on what you buy (or should).

Look at the Gitzo, you will not go wrong. I have had two of them
for over twenty-five years with no trouble.

Around $125 but I don't mind waiting for some more time if the Tripod suggested here does not match my budget, I like to shoot Landscapes, Macro, Aircarfts, Street and Birds.

In INDIA some of the products which are in available outside are not available, we either get it when through people who visit states or pay extra if we can get that in grey.

Currectly I have the 18-55IS, will be buying a 70-300 or 55-250 shortly. Also will be getting a EFS 10-22 for Wide Angle and 100MM Macro as well.

Thank you everybody for providing valueable suggestions.

Skip's suggested set up is a great starter rig. You are going to have a very tough time getting anything decent for less than that.

$125 is going to be hard to get what you want for landscapes. Most of the cheapies don't do well at all in any breeze - in fact some of them are worse than nothing at all (I have one of those...).

None of the above...

I recommend against tripods which have lgg braces or supports because you cannot adjust the angle of each leg separately. This can be important on uneven terrain and when desiring to get low.

Macro photography demands a tripod which can get low and that can also get close to the subject.

There are several tripods which articulate in order to get the camera closer to the subject.

Giottos is one of these:

Benbo (an English manufacturer, not Benro which is from China)

http://cgi.ebay.com …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

However, a lot of macro photography of living creatures is done hand held. This is my setup which I learned from Dr. Deepak Rao of Bangalore, India. Dr. Rao is one of the best macro photographers that I know.

The bracket is a Siegelite which costs $40 from Adorama in New York City and is available usually for under $25 on eBay.

You can also get a used Bogen-Manfrotto 3001 or 3021 on eBay relatively inexpensively (I don't know about shipping to India). While these tripods are not articulating, the have the ability to reverse the center column and support the camera, upside-down, under the apex of the tripod. This will get you to ground level if you so desire.
