At the end of the year im going on holiday for 6weeks.

Im still shooting JPEG not converted to RAW as yet...

How many GB of storage will I need for this trip.

Last holiday for 3 week I took over 2000 pictures including my snorkelling pictures.

Currently I have 2x 8GB and 1 X GB media cards, how many more should I get?

Well, if what you had before for 3 weeks worked well for you, why not just double it?

2 x 8 GB = 16 GB + 1 = 17 GB total

# of photos expected? 4000

4000 x typical JPG size in MB / 1024 = number of gigs you will require. You might be better served with a storage device like a Hyperdrive rather than more cards.

Canon says the Large Fine JPEGs on the 40D average around 3.5 MB, so you can get about 2000-2100 on an 8 GB card; around 5200 shots on the cards you have then.

Another vote for the laptop. A major plus is you can cull photos as you go.(you can do this in-camera, but laptop screen would be alot better) I would HATE to go thruogh 4,000 pictures when I got back from a trip.

I think the main difference here is raw vs jpeg, but as you say your a jpeg shooter so
4000*4mb=16000mb/1000=16gb. Thats a measly 16gb, so you should be fine with your current setup. If I were you I would at least grab another 4gb just in case. Maybe think about shooting in RAW, its a world of difference!

Yikes.. processing 4000 raw files would be a nightmare alone. :)

Not a big fan of lonely nights in front of the computer screen?

I just love the quality difference I get when shooting raw vs jpeg so once I made the switch I havent looked back.
But now with my 40d and its 12mb files I have a new problem on my hands!

4k frames if you are shooting jpeg.

8k if shooting RAW.

yep sounds like you have more than enough space already if just shooting jpeg, you could always grab an extra pair of 2gig cards cheap just to make sure!!

True better for housekeeping along the way, and no editing 4000 pics on return, deffinatly a must get, maybe even on travels as it will be cheaper than dear GB...:(

Yeah, still a JPEG shooter, I believe in one step at a time fully get used to my camera before taking the next step into the RAW world, I've read its loads better and I will get there... give me time ;)

Thanks for all your help here guys......

I'm a raw shooter, but shoot no where that volume. Actually, since I have switched to raw only, my volume has decreased. A day of shooting might yield 100 pics. Of those I may process about 10 to 20 and the remaining 80 just stay raw.
