Please forgive me if this question sounds silly. I am completely new to DSLR. I have recently purchased a used 30D and new 50mm 1.8 lens. My question is regarding auto focus.

When I shoot in the basic zone modes with the lens set to AF the auto focus works well. When I am in the creative zone modes with the lens set to AF the lens does not attempt to auto focus at all-ever. Do I need to use manual focus whenever I shoot in the creative zone or is this a malfunction of the lens or camera?

I searched through my manual and could not find the answer. I have learned so much reading through the threads here but didn't find this question on a search. Thanks in advance for any help :)

AF should function in all modes as long as the lens is set to AF. Do you have access to another lens to try?

Thanks for your reply. No I don't own any other lenses unfortunately. Hmmmm, I likely can find one to borrow to test though. That helps me though knowing that it should work.

Try re-setting camera to factory default settings via menu.

You all are so helpful. It turns out that yes, the custom settings were set to allow for focus using the *. Thanks so much for all your help. I feel sort of silly but you all are so kind.

You may want to leave it the way it is.

Once you get used to focusing with the "*" it's hard to go back.

Honestly, I can see why you would feel this way. I have been practicing with it this evening and it is really easy to get used to. I actually think I like it much better than pressing the shutter down half way already. I think I will leave it as is. Thanks for your advice.
