I like the crop best. It's not all that grainy though. Still, I got a special action for cleaning up noise and banding from the 1D, and it works in CS2 when I had CS2, I have put it into CS3 and it works great. Much more subtle than NN or NI and only costs $15 from FM in the software section. I might have used it on this crop, then some USM in LAB Color Mode.

Good work! I see that you have the same problem that I have. I can't seem to capture the red of the throat, it always turns out much more black than red. Maybe someone here has some suggestions?

Mitch, I presume by that comment that it works better than the built-in noise reduction filter in CS3?

not Mitch, but based on his suggestion some months ago, I also purchased the program he mentioned - and it works great! Much better than the filter in CS3.

Kenny, yes, it works really well. It is not as in your face as the Neat Image stuff, which I also have and use some times, but never quite figured out the controls for. This has no controls. It's an action you pic the ISO you used for the shot, then hit the run button. Does a fine job, looks very natural and only seems to get the background graininess, which doesn't seem possible, but looks like it anyway. :)

Here's the page with all their software (external link), Look for stuff for your camera and the action with the name ISOR in it, although the one I got for the 1D banding problem works fine on the 40D jpg's also. 1D ISOR-BR Action (Noise/banding removal)

BTW, they say it's for CS2, but of course, works fine in CS3 anyway.

Dan, the flash of red on the throat feathers only happens when the light is from a certain angle. Only the bird can turn it's head to get it, and I found last summer that even flash does not always bring it out.

As I was shooting this guy, you could see the red flash in the light. I may process one if I can find one that I'm happy with the IQ.

This is a difficult bird to shoot at the best of times.I think that you've done well, however, since you ask for criticism.....if possible a tighter, less centred crop on shot # 2 or 3 would be my choice. A little sharpening and.....unfortunately I hate the back ground. I find it very busy and distracting but I don't know what you can do about it other than eliminate it.

The NeatImage shot is much clearer! But good captures originally.
