I have seen in other thread about DIY shutter releases and we recently got a cheap piece of junk headset for a cell phone as part of an accessories package, so I though I'd try to make one out of it. It already has the 3/32" (2.5mm) plug.
This headset has a push-to-talk button (it may also have been a mute button, I don't know for sure as I never used it), so I though it may be super simple to use, just plug it in and it may work! Well I plugged it in and it would fire the shutter on my film rebel....continuously.....
I decided to open up the compartment that the button is in and I found the button, and the microphone. I simply snipped the two wires leading to the microphone, plugged it in again and nothing happened... until I pushed the button. It worked flawlessly. I did not test AF though.
Here is the inside of the microphone/button compartment, showing the wires that I snipped. I eventually cut the wires right at the connection to the button.

Here is the set-up, all plugged in and working like a champ.

At this point I went ahead and cut the wires leading to the headphone......... Big mistake, This causes the whole set-up to quit working.

I then soldered the wires that went to the headphones to one side of the button.

It worked, but the wires are so tiny and you pretty much need special equipment and be extremely well trained with a soldering iron to make it work. I could not get everything back together without breaking the solder joint.
So, in conclusion, for a quick, easy and potentially cheap shutter release for your Rebel series camera, pick up a cheap headset for a mobile phone and simply clip the wires to the microphone, but do not cut off the headphones. You may look strange and not have AF, but at least you will have nice, sharp photos!
