Hello,

I am looking for a dehumified cabinet to store my camera equipment - 2 bodies, 6 lenses etc., as I live in a rather humid place.

Any suggestions ? I found a name PROCAN while searching on google , but could not find any place that sells it.

regards
S

Generally they can deal with it I would say... as long as you don't shock them with temperature changes... but if not I can't help

A general location might help . . .
You might also try looking at firearms storage safes; these often can be obtained with (standard or optional) humidity control.

You will not see any benefit from a "dehumidified" storage container. I live less than 2-miles from the ocean, my equipment is fine.

If you want to go all out for fun though, a nitrogen purged dry storage is the way to go. We use them to store moisture sensitive electronics all the time.

From the user name, I suspect s/he's in India, near the equator with attendant high temperatures and 100% humidity. A "dry closet" significantly reduces the incidence of fungal growth in your equipment in those conditions.

A lot of people in Singapore use these ones (I don't have one so can't comment on how good they are):

On their contact page it looks like they only have distributors in SG, Malaysia and India...

A lot of people just use an airtight box with some silica packs. Much cheaper

You can create very effective dry storage by making your own over-sized desiccant packs. You can buy a gallon of silica gel beads at the pet store for about $12 to $15. It's marketed for use in cat boxes. Just make sure you don't get the old school clay-based product. Look for the translucent white beads. If you look at the ingredients it should say "Silica" or "Silica Gel" or "Silica Beads", etc.

Fill small cloth bags with these beads and pack them in an airtight container along with your gear. You can also poke a couple dozen small holes in used water or soda bottles and fill them with silica gel. Just make sure the bottles clean and dry before you use them. I usually dump out a handful of beads on a clean, dry towel and and roll them around to get the dust off before I use them.

Electronics manufacturers (including Canon) have used silica gel desiccant packs for years. Make your own. Make them huge. They are a very cheap way of keeping things dry in high humidity situations. You just have to make sure your container is airtight for them to be effective.

If you already have some sort of cabinet or safe, you can just add a gun safe dehumidier to it. One like this from Cabela's:

What about a room dehumidifier? I have one in my basement because that is where I store all my guitars and music equipment. I keep the room at about 50-55% Relative Humidity.

Thank you all very much for the quick responses.

I (He) live in Goa , India where the humidity touches 95%+ for 3-4 months of monsoon starting now. This can cause fungus etc to grow on lenses etc.

For the moment I am thinking of making a cabinet and installing a low wattage heating coil in it. In India, we don't have many gun stores since weapons are not commonly sold.

Cheers
S
