This is normal - for some reason the computer won't find RAW files when a camera is plugged in directly. You need to take the CF out and use a CF reader to upload your photos. I found this out the hard way myself a few years ago.
Thanks for the advice, I will have to pick on of these up.

Did you actually shoot in RAW? Silly question I know but worth asking.
Are the CR2's on the laptop and the problem is that you can't open them?
Can you not just drag and drop the CR2 files from the camera to the laptop?
Not a silly question at all - I bet 9 out of 10 problems are "silly". In this case, I did shoot in RAW/JPG format. The CR2s are not on the laptop, however, there are two of every JPG with a different icon for each one. Strangely enough, the size of each image is the same. I am not able to drag and drop, which really is frustrating!

In case you can't get hold of a CF reader soon enough (I do reccomend one), here is the download link for your XTI:

I think EOS Utility is what will allow you to download RAW directly from Camera. (I may be mistaken, been so long since I've done it myself.)
(for the Canon software updates to install you need to have software already installed from your Canon CD (maybe not the particular software you are trying to install, mind you... see the requirements on the Canon page.)
There is post somewhere in this forum detailing how to get the software installed if you don't have access to (or lost) your CD which came with camera.
ALSO: Many new laptops have card readers built in... typically you press a little button and a plastic piece will pop out (its there to keep dust from getting into computer... so hang onto it and replace it when done.)
Thanks David, this is what I needed! I was able to get it all working like it works on my home PC. Unfortunately, my laptop does not have a card reader built in, but I have one at home and will be sure and pack it with my laptop in the future.
Thanks to all three of you for the replies. It was going to put a real damper on my photo taking if I couldn't save those RAW files.
