Would you consider a used 300mm f2.8 IS at 10-15% below retail a good price?

Amazon has it for $4k now and a great condition UT one can be had around $3.45k or $3.5.

$500 is still alot of money but does it make sense to go new?

I can inspect it locally if getting used though.

Thanks for the assurance. I'm thinking local pickup too.

Depends on how you look at it. A UTxxxx lens is way out of warranty. For $500 more you get a return/exchange period as well as a fresh one-year warranty. Only you can decide if that's worth the $500. Now granted, if something were to break on the used lens it probably would have done it by now...

It's my understanding that canon warranties don't transfer anyway...so if you buy a used lens, no matter how old it is, it's not under warranty.

Canon warranties are for the lens, not the owner. If you buy a used lens that is 6 months old, you the new owner, are entitled to the remaining 6 months of warranty.

This also applies to buyers in the USA and Canada when crossing borders. The Warranty is for North america, not just the USA or Canada. I am unaware if Canon recognizes Mexico as part of North American warranties.

Its funny you should mention that because I spoke to Fixation (one of the uk canon service centres) and they said the same thing. I would need to go through the original owner to get any repairs done.

I read the warranty and did not see any stipulation that precludes a second owner from having warranty.
"This Limited Warranty is only effective upon presentation of this warranty card and proof of purchase."
I did not see anywhere in the warranty that you must be the original owner. But you must posses proof of purchase.

I agree with you, however that is different than the warranty portion.

bannedPermanent ban

i would buy 10 to 15% less than current price to used lens if date code within UV or UW.

As for warranty, if you still have the blank warranty card, you still can fill out and submit to Canon along with lens when you send in for service. They will treat it as "gift" item.
