Hi All,

Heres a very dull pic I took a few days ago, I had a basic UV filter on the lens.

What I like about this pic is the orange glow/haze to the left, I know that in this case it was there because there was dust in the air. But, iv seen this effect on all kinds of images, mostly model shots, I was wondering if theres a filter that can help achieve this effect in normal everyday shooting?

thanks

Matt,
Welcome to the forum. I am not sure if there is a filter that will do what you are looking to do, but maybe a gold reflector may give you the tones you are looking for.

A warming filter and turn down the contrast?

there's plenty of photoshop actions that you can use. you're trying to get that "vintage-y" feel, correct?

First, you can use a lens hood to filter out external light sources from the frame. Second, you can try using a polarizer to cut the glare off of surfaces and increase saturation and contrast.

However, from my experience on farms, the glow is from sunlight hitting dust in the air. And that is almost inevitable on a farm without grass around. You could always try shooting away from the sun, that helps.

Good luck.

John

Ignore what I said. I'm retarded.

Normally good advice John, except that he wants the flare & haze. ;)

cheers for the advice guys...but the above comment is exactly what I want...haze, flair and glare

heres another example..Im sure that there is no filter, just shooting at the start or the end of the day.. I was wondering if there was more to it than that or somthing Id missed. I know the effect could be cheated in PS no problem, but id rather not :)

Cheers for the advice though!

I'd say that image is photoshopped since the haze is opposite from the direction of the sun.

I agree. And I don't think it's his image, so I'll have to change it to a link. © issues?
IMAGE POSTING RULES

..haze, flair and glare

Take a piece of plastic, like what they package CF cards in. Use something like coarse sandpaper to put some scratches near the edges. Then cut a medium sized hole in it & try it out without a hood shooting near the sun.
Experiment with the hood, more or less scratches, & with larger sized holes until you find something that works best for you.

I dont know who took the photo (im going to try and find out though), but I dont think theres any copyright issue...its the album cover for Goldfraps new album, its everywhere at the moment, and its linking to an music review site. If I am breaking rules I apologise..I can re-link to there Amazon page, or even there website if somones says I should ?
