These are candid shots whose only post processing has been RAW conversion and cropping.

Please critique fully but keep in mind that they are candids which were not posed. And please edit and improve them. ThanX in advance

BTW, the red complexion is from being in the sun all day.

#2 is cool..though, could use some sharpening. #3 is also nice, but could have used a 'touch' of fill, and a catchlight, to bring out the eyes.

#1, his hair is a little blown, and I believe it to be too much of a candid, if that makes sense?

Good lookin' kid, though. Keep it up.

#1 and #3 work very well. I would have been very happy to have captured these images.
#2 would have worked if you had some more space to the left of the frame in the direction where the boy is staring. Your point of interest does not have to occupy centre stage.

I prefer the Bokeh in #2 tho, as its less harsh.

Regarding your second post, don't always expect an immediate response. Not all of us are glued to POTN 24/7.

I've done some photoshop work, kept it minimal on one of your images.

Shadow / hightlights tools to bring out more detail in the shadows.
Hue saturation: Work in the Yellow channel, Adjusted hue to rid of the green colouring to the face ( masked )
Slight sharpening / saturation work

Chappie, thanks for your help. Nice work in your edit. These shots were with a new lens. This quality would never have been possible from the kit lenses I've been using before. I was just so amazed at the improvement that a lens can make. I was so pleased with the out-of-camera results that I didn't consider post processing. First images ever to come out of my cameras that didn't require massive PP eforts. I've heard many times that a good photographer takes good pictures regardless of the inferiority of his equipment. Well, personally, I do not now nor have I ever given that theory much consideration.:D I see vast differences in my own photography (even when I shoot manual) with different equipment where the photographer is the same only the equipment is different.

inthedeck, ThanX for your observations and suggestions. I'll be applying them later.

Cheers,
MJ

Just seeing this now, and the last photo is the one I like out of the set...I don;t think they need much work at all?

#3 is my pick.

I did some subtle lighting edits to darken the background, and bring more focus to the subject. Slight curves to the eyes and called it a day. No skin work for kids.

Excellent:D! You eliminated a lot of the blown kicker in the hair, too. ThanX, LeuceDeuce.

A touch of the Render/Lighting filter to fabricate some Rembrandt or to fabricate a Short Light modeling effect to make the face seem a bit narrower could easily alter the candid status.
A touch of the Liquid filter to increase the size of his eyes and it would probably be even more improved. And these shots were only candids.

Anyone else care to give'em a go? I would appreciate seeing what the experts can do with a candid.
ThanX--midnitejam

Part of the reason he appears red is because the photos are posted with Adobe RGB color profiles instead of sRGB.

I liked the 3rd photo so I did a quick retouch.
- removed green color cast
- attempted to replicate the use of a Soft Gold reflector
- burned the highlights in his hair
- reduced the shadows on his face and shirt to reveal some of the details
- darkened background
