I've had the Canon grip on my 20D for over 2 years and have never had a problem with it. It has worked flawlessly for me. The price is higher but that's because the Canon name is on it. I'm thinking about buying the BG-e2N for the 40D.

Link Delight and HK supplies on eBay both carry a grip that's exactly like the canon, the batteries go in from the back instead of the side. I had an optika that looked like a bge2 but with the side tray and it quit working after about 6 months, it was replaced free with one of the newer ones with 2 shutter buttons but no scroll wheele or (= -) buttons. It works perfectly but Im not in love with it at all.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

The first accessory I buy for any camera is the battery grip. It just makes them feel better in my hand. I bought the original BG-E2 for the 20D when I got mine back in 2004. It was one that fell under the recall and I sent it in, but I never had any of the issues that were attributed to it.

When I bought a 40D last month, I ordered a BG-E2n at the same time. Works perfectly...

My choice is always Canon for a battery grip. I have read enough mixed reviews on the Opteka grips to suspect they have inconsistent quality control issues. Some people say theirs are flawless while others have had numerous problems with them. There's enough uncertainty about Opteka to keep me away from them. Regarding the Targus grips, I've heard nothing but complaints about them.
