CA and purple fringe - how normal is this? (17-40 f/4L)

I'm lovin' this lens, but I'm noticing small areas of CA around the edges (which I have been fixing in Camera Raw) and then I came across a photo with some really bad blue-ish haze in the light shining through some leaves. In doing a bit of digging, it seems that there are some differing opinions on what's acceptable/normal for a given lens; below are some 100% crop from two photos, one with CA, one with purple fringe - what's your opinion?

Wow the second picture looks extremely bad.

I could be wrong but the 2nd image looks way above normal yet seeing how the aperture was at f/4 could very well explain it.

Something's wrong, IMO.

Did you have a filter on?

Yes. The first shot I had on a Hoya Pro1 Digital CPL, the second I had a Pro1 Digital UV. I'm not so worried about the CA in the first, it's easily remedied (although I wouldn't want to deal with it if I don't have to), but I wasn't sure if it was related to what's happening in the second shot.

Filters of any quality can pronounce CA in a lens, especially at wide open apertures.

To eliminate the filters, can you try again with them off to see if it's the lens or the filter that's to blame?
