I have been lurking and posting occasionally, but no photos. I figured I would post one. I shot this with a 550ex off camera on a light stand into an umbrella. The flash was on my left and a silver reflector on my right.
It was shot at f5.6 and 1/200s using my Canon DRebel and a Tamron 28-75. Did a little photoshop to get the b/w. That was about it.

I liked the pic too. But to my taste, position of hands look little uncomfortable, just my opinion though, I am not an expert :D

Very nice photo! What kind of umbrella do you use? I am considering this same style of set up. Do you have a specific stand for the flash? I am curious how all this mounts and sits. Sorry for all of the questions.

The umbrella is just a 30" silver generic umbrella reflector. I did have to buy a special adapter to mount onto the stand. The stand is nothing specific. Then I used a hot shoe adapter with a sync cord and a Wein flash accessory on the camera hot shoe. If you want more, info let me know.

I like the lighting, but the pose looks too staged. I have a Digital Rebel, and have had difficulties with taking photos indoors (even with a 550 EX-Speedlite). Group shots are the worst. Perhaps this method would work. Any thoughts?

I think this method would work for you, but it is a bit much to haul around. You may consider a second 550ex and st-e2 transmitter. This way you'll have two flashes at the same time. I have a friend with this setup and he loves it. Very versatile and compact. The studio like setup is superior, but I feel more so for those "staged" shots.
