okay, these are unprocessed (so excuse the mess) but similar in exposure results

M3, iso 50 1/250 F4 htp off
*snip*
40D f5.6 1/1250 f5.6 htp on (obviously I'm not using this one but I wanted to post it since they were taken at the same general time)
*snip*
the settings made possible on the 40D, gave me a LOT more latitude and all the highlights (though it's hard to tell here) are viewable on my screen.

And you were shooting RAW on the 40D too, right? So it does affect RAW also. Not just JPG?

correct

the lighting was very harsh...overhead at 1 or so pm plus reflected light from the snow...worst lighting I've ever had to deal with

Ouch not nice lighting, did you use much fill flash?

I am not sure what this is telling me as the one with htp on looks more blown ???

*smack upside the head*

Even unprocessed, those are great. Yes, some of the highlights are blown in the first one, but it's still a great shot.

I couldn't use any fill flash with the M3 because it totally whited it out. I know her dress looks blown but it's not...in these small sizes it's hard to see...if you look at the veil and the clouds in the first one...they are gone....I guess, I just don't have good comparison examples...only settings where you can see the extremes I had to go to, to get even a viable shot.

(I'm not going to leave those shots up)

Same here. Maybe it's because the M3 shot has more trees in the background, so there's less highlights in that shot to compare.

anyway, most of my shots with the 40D are going to take minimal processing...and the outside M3 ones are going to take work...

Lisa, if you cold only take one camera with you on a shoot, which one would it be?

Hmmm....

Just about all of the shots I posted from the zoo trip have been unprocessed (except for resizing). I'm just happy with the results from the camera.

And I'm just plain too darned lazy to make them look any better.

Case in point - this is a pissed off little tortoise...

I guess a controlled test would show things better

I plan to do one before my trip in a couple weeks. I just need to find the right conditions. Or better yet, do a few controlled tests under multiple conditions.

for a portrait shoot? the 40D. I love it. I used it more at both weddings than the M3. For an action shoot the M3. I was thinking that if it weren't for the fact that I love to shoot action things, I'd sell the M3 and pick up another 40D.
