Howdy. I'm home.

So, um... How is it supposed to be pronounced?

Welcome home...Poughkeepsie (at least in NY) is pronounced Poe-kip-see.

OK, computer shopping is completely foreign to me. This is what I want to be able to do, so what features do I look for to accomplish the tasks?

First of all, it needs to be a laptop.

Want enough power to work on pictures without lag time between processes.

A screen that will give me some true images, is that possible on a laptop?

Enough memory to have LR and imaging software such as PSP as well as Office software.

Wireless options, more than one USB, though I think these are beginning to be a standard.

Thanks for the help. Oh, and though I know Apple is great for the arts, it wouldn't be compatible with the rest of our network, so it will have to be PC.

Macs are more network compatible than you might think. But that's beside the point.

You'll need

  • 17" screen (I use a resolution of 1920x1280)
  • At least 2Ghz processor speed
  • Minimum of 4Gb RAM
  • Depending on your network storage, you'll want about 80Gb hard disc inside the laptop

Thanks Pete.

What about the HD verses LCD blah, blah, blah, on the screen.

Everything I look at talks about high gaming resolution, does that work for digital pictures too?

Yeah. Anything that's good for gaming will be good for post processing also - since they're both geared toward processing and graphical manipulation.

Thanks again Pete. I'm mystified by the good, better, best. Do I really need $1,500 technology or will $999 suit all my needs and then some.

Of course, Curt will have some say in the decision too. I'm just really tired of having to take turns on the office set up to process pictures. We can cut a lot of time if we can work on our shots at the same time.

The laptop I'm on now, is 3rd hand and will be our marketing tool for showing slide shows of the CD's. We have a LCD screen we hook to it and Curt devised a plate that fits on our big tripod to mount the screen. We found it works much better to elevate the screen above the kidlets to keep them from being right on top of it where other can't see and gives the parents the chance to see by standing the behind the kiddies.

We do keep an eye on it and a hand ready to hold when little feet get too close the the legs.

Most screens for gaming just have a very high refresh rate so you don't see digital artifacts while the subjects are moving about the screen. Since your pictures are static, that isn't a big issue...most modern LCD screens for better laptops provide outstanding image quality. A quick stop in your local Best Buy or Circuit City will give you a look at which screen gives you the best look for your needs.

I definitely wouldn't want less than a 17" screen for photo editing. My current laptop is an AMD x64 3400 with 2gb of RAM and a 250gb HD....I have no problem running LR and Elements 5 on it. I don't think I would waste time putting Photoshop on a laptop...too big and too much of a resource hog. If I need to do serious PS work, I can always shift over to a desktop unit.

2gb of RAM and 250gb hard drive would be my bare minimums today...4gb of RAM and a 300gb drive would be better. I have had fantastic luck with Gateway systems for 15+ years....

What do you think? The designs around the outside match the designs on the discs.

Very nice.

Got to grab a shower and get to work see you guys/gals in a few and I'll try to finish catching up.

I ended up buying an ASUS gaming computer as it pretty much had all the features I wanted for photo editing and CAD work. I am very happy with it, except for the poor speakers (not that great for watching movies). I went 15" widescreen for the sake of portability, and the fact I do little editing on it, it is mainly used for work stuff, but does get used for photo PP work when away from home just to check the shots out more then anything. While 17" would be better, it seems twice the size to lug around. A buddy of mine uses a 13" laptop, but does only minor photo editing on it, it is super portable.

Thanks Dan. LR is where we spend the most time for PP, through the network I can work in different catalogs and get them ready and converted for the final detail off a laptop.

At least now I can sound half way intelligent when Curt and I discuss this matter before purchasing. Now, how to convince him on a color.

Those were EXACTLY the requirements I was looking for. I did much research, and ended up with the Dell Inspiron 1720. 4G RAM. It runs Cs2 and LR flawlessly. It's got the 'true life' (or something like that) screen, not the glossy screen. It's very nice and does exactly what I want.

I ended up buying it from Staples instead of ordering it from Dell, so I didn't get to choose the color. :( If I HAD gotten to choose the color, it would have most definitely been green.
