They forget to teach that snakes are an important part of the ecosystem.

Well, I broke a self-inflicted rule and didn't research first...I'm a big Snopes visitor...I posted on impulse when I saw this on the tube...should have known better.

Was amazed how huge the Eastern Diamomd back can get however.

Was reading through the site and see that they serve fried rattlesnake on a few days of the festival...after the weigh-in. Makes me wonder what they do with the snakes that they catch. They cannot possibly eat them all. Wonder if they are relocated or let loose after the festival.

I really don't have a problem with someone catching and eating a few snakes or clearing pastures. The problem is it is an unregulated species so, unlike deer for example, the population is not monitored and limits set on how many can be taken. I imagine they are skinned and the meat is sold for consumption, the skin is used, and the rattles glued to novelty crap. The fact that an animal is used or eaten has no relevance to killing it. That is a feel good, emotion based, idea ingrained in us since we were taught natives were not bad for killing because they used the whole animal. The real issue is how does it effect ecology and the environment. Hunting raises huge sums of federal and state money for real conservation and habitat. Much more than many so called environmental groups who are just lobbyists. If someone wants to kill a deer for a "trophy" and not eat it the impact is the same. Money is raised and the population is kept at levels healthy for the environment. The eating part is purely emotional justification. Okay I'll stop now, thank you for listening.
