Canon Point and Shoot for under $200

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a small Point and shoot that I can bring out occasionally to dinners, events, etc. I already own an XTi, and Canon g7, and find that the g7 is too big for me in many cases. What are your suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I purchased a A590IS a couple of months ago. Nice little camera. I carry it with me most of the time, even when I have the XTi. Don't expect XTi shutter speed, but the convenience is a good trade-off at times. I bought a set of four rechargeable batteries so that I have two spares and carry a couple of extra AA's along with the camera in a small bag.

Forgot to mention that I got it for $149 at Office Depot. Camera was on sale for $159 and I had a $10 coupon.

Wide? The SD850is only has a 35-140mm lens. I suppose it's a little wider than the ones that start at 36, 37, or 38mm.

The SD870is and SD800is both have a 28-105mm lens. Now that's what I call wide. But they cost a little more than $200. ($260?)

G7 is big?!

The SD1000 is only $166 at amazon.com and its easily one of canons most popular point shoots and its really tiny!

Go for an A series. A720IS great little camera.

What I don't like about the SD series, it's basically all auto!

Yeah, I vote for the A720IS too. Full manual controls, nice image quality, < $200.

^And still big. No one seems to read.

Go for the SD750, awesome and the screen is great. I would never used the viewfinder on these cameras, hardly used the digital one on my S3. Might find a SD850 IS used for around the same price and sometimes it goes on sale places for $210. Good luck!

Big is a matter of opinion! I don't find the A720IS overly big, therefore, I recommended it.

I've voice my opinion on the SD series, thus, I probably did read for all you can tell.

Nor has research by the critic. Let's keep it civil. The A720 fits smack between the G7 and SD750 in size and weight. Bear in mind that thickness is a maximum dimension, not average dimension. Only the OP can decide if something's too big.
G7 106.4 x 71.9 x 42.5 mm, 320 g.
A720 97.3 x 67 x 41.9 mm, 200 g.
SD750 91.6 x 56.8 x 19.6 mm, 130 g.

As I did read the post and also did figure the A720IS is smaller than the G7.

Got the 590IS a couple of weeks ago. It's a nice little camera, not shirt pocket sized but it'll fit into a safari jacket pocket. I like that it has a handgrip, unlike the SD shirtpocket cameras which are so flat. Also the SD cameras, as someone else mentions is too automatic. I also like a optical viewfinder, small though it is, to supplement the LCD. you can also save on battery life by not using the LCD, although I must admit that it's nice to look at all the feedback settings on the 2.5" LCD screen.

But the main reason I bought this camera is for digiscoping use. For regular work, I rely on my 20D DSLR. I paid $154 for the camera from B&H. No tax for California residents, and the shipping cost was included with the shipment of my spotting scope and other accessories.
