First shot especially nice Mike. Shows the power of critical focus, a steady hand and good PP.

thanks, I agree with you as well, the lens is tricky but is capable. I thought I had a bad lens then I realized I was just bad or using it outside its sweet spot. Biggest thing for me is getting shutter speed up, not being wide open and my particular lens is best at under 450mm. You also have to have good technique like any long lens.

One of those fluke things. I grabbed my 5D2 body and the 150-500 Sigma OS when I was off to visit the grandkids. I intended to take the 7D.

These are approximately a bit less than 50 percent of the images. And there was no on-board flash which would have sparked up things a bit. Hummingbird on left, ISO 320, 1/400s @ f8. Hummingbird on the right, ISO 400, 1/500s @ f8. All in heavy shade and backlit. 500mm.

Very nice for the lighting available!

Any body using auto ISO to keep their shutter speed up at the aperture required ?
Or just using a higher manual setting ?

regards Martin

I dont have my 150-500mm yet, but i can tell you that auto iso is indeed pretty handy. As long as youre keeping the shutter speed in a reasonable range for the light available + aperture selection then why not!

Then you can use manual, set shutter speed and aperture and let camera decide ISO to get proper exposure. You would adjust it manually anyways before shutter or aperture if doing 'full manual' anyways, so why not auto iso? (eg. you are shooting 1/1000, f8, ISO 100 and its telling you its under exposed on the meter, what would you change first to properly expose? ISO in most cases!) The camera does a fine job of auto-iso in appropriate settings(light).

I thought it might, have yet to try it, weather, of late, here in the UK has not been good (that sun thing is fading from my memory):)
It should be showing its self more often now, and I should be able to keep the shutter up and the aperture small.
I will try it.

Thanks for your comments

I use auto ISO a lot for surf photography. I set my shutter and aperture and let the iso adjust for exposure.

What kind of TC's are you guys using for this lens?
I just got one and Canon TC's won't work for this.

Will it AF on 1dm3?

Thanks

With or without TC? If it's without, it works fine with a 1DS3:

There are Sigma TCs that will work with both Canon lenses and all the Sigma telezooms. Plus Tamron and Kenko offer TCs that will work with the different brands. Quality may suffer. Vignetting may occur.

The lens will autofocus with all the Canon DSLRs, but mine sometimes needs a little manual assistance at closest focus.

Below, one way to use the lens and a hummingbird silhouette (I didn't have a flash that day).
