So you like the finish to chip and peel off with heavy use? :S

I've never had that problem, although I have seen it on other lenses. My 70-200 hasn't had had an easy life either, nor the 120-300 I had. Personally the old finish had more of a quality feel, the new finish just feels cheaper. It won't stop me getting the 85mm f1.4 though :) just a shame it won't match the 30, 50, 70-200 and 150-500.

edit: Just to clarify, I'm not calling your lens cheap! :D I mean that in my opinion sigma used to offer something just that bit different that set them apart, now they are like the rest. I hope they don't start producing white lenses though! Of course there were peeling issues with the old coating, and I bet they save money not providing it (and fixing it!) which is all good in todays financial climate.

I have had both the new and old style finish on this lens, the new style is easier to wipe off and doesn't collect the dust, matches the body better and feels a little nicer to hold.

The old lens finish was arguably better for birding as the matt finish didn't reflect sunlight.

Horses for courses really, performance is the same regardless of course.

Just as I was going to call it a day a chickadee presented me with a shot. I used a fill flash (yn560) on its 3rd lowest setting, shutter speed was 1/250 hand held @ 500mm.

Nice :)

Only a starling and a crop without any sharpening or noise reduction. Seems reasonably sharp for hand held?

...and a heavily cropped shot of a robin, with a fair amount of fill light applied in pp as well:

Got out this afternoon for about an hour. Here are some of my favorites.

Robin - iso 1600, 1/500, 340mm, f8

I stalked this gal through the bushes for 50 yards and he finally perched herself a foot off the ground on a branch, perfectly positioning herself for me!

Allan,

I LOVE your moon shot! I think it is much better from mine. There are so many more craters visible in yours, plus it is sharper. Did you do any PP work on yours? Mine is SOOC. Would your shots be similar to mine out of your camera with no PP?

Please help me. I want to learn to get better!

Thank you

View your photo in Flickr, above it will be a little toolbar with an actions menu drop down and icons for email, Facebook and twitter. To the right of the icons is a little arrow, click this and a drop down menu will appear allowing you to select bbcode and the size of picture you want. Select and copy all the text in the box and paste it into your post here :)
