Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM - Bigmos

I think the bokeh is due to the aperture and the relative distance of the background items to the in-focus area...I've gotten the same kind of crappy bokeh using my 70-200 F4 when the background items are relatively close.

Anyway, back to pics - one from this past fall:

the only time i've seen bokeh that has lines and is ugly like that is when a filter is involved...

Should have mine in a few days, will post ASAP.

OK so I got mine and took it out for a test drive, Image looks pretty good but I noticed when you are looking thru the view finder and the OS is on the image in the view finder stats to shake real bad. It doesn't do it all the time. IS there something wrong? this can't be normal. I am shooting with a 1DII.

Are you using a tripod? If you are and the OS is on, then this can happen, but I was always under the impression that the shake would be not noticeable in the viewfinder, just as soft images. I can tell you that I have a brand new one (than than 2 weeks) and the OS is nearly invisible. A slight noise while it is running... very slight.... a click, almost light a shutter noise when it starts and when it stops. No jumping view finder, no loud grinding noise.

I kind of like the start up and shut down noises. Reminds me that it is there, and kinda kicks me into thinking about the shutter speed. When the shutter speed is high enough it doesn't make any noise.

I just finally got around to trying my lens on my 5d (I have been using it on the 50d) up until now. This lens "SINGS"on the 5d. It is even sharp at 500mm wide open. I can't believe it! There is some vigenetting, but one click in LR3 takes care of that.

No I was hand holding, the image is still for the most part but once in a while it starts to shake in the view finder. Here is on of the first shots with it, 100% crop.

Edit: The actual picture does not seem to be affected but the shake is kind of annoying .

That's a nice photo. At the risk of pointing out the obvious, at 500mm a butterfly sneezing a few hundred feet away will effect the lens. Of course its a matter of individual perception, but with is off it shakes, with is on it more swishes. With the OS on it actually makes me a little sick if I look through the view finder for long enough.

I initially thought that when people talked about controlling breathing and mirror lock up, and proper shutter release buffoon techniques, that they were being overly dramatic perfectionist. After 1 day with the lens, I am quickly understanding what they ment. I used to just toss the camera up, point and shoot. Not at all like that with this lens. It take much more purposeful movements, but the reweards are great.

Well yes, I believe it will take some time and practice with it to get good at it. This is the longest lens I have ever owned and have shot all of a dozen frames with it. I just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with it. I have shot many IS lenses and have never seen image shake in the view finder like this.

i don't really understand the shake...when you first depress the shutter button and the OS kicks it...it does give a little bit of a shake to start...but then settles down after that...

No not mine, I see the initial shake and then it settles. But if you keep the OS going the image starts to shake to the point it is almost too blurry to view.

It's beginning to sound like you might have an issue with your lens. Maybe worthy of an exchange.

Well it is used, I am going to call Sigma on Monday and see what they say. I will have to renegotiate with the seller I imagine.

That's the thing that I wondered with this lens when I use it in my 5D classic compared to my 60D. It is more sharper than the 60D, though I haven't done a head to head comparison between the two.
