Its a great birding lens, but it is so much more than that. Its great when you want a specific type of picture, and you are willing to accept that you won't get every shot. For example, I never carry it with family around, unless my wife has her p&s to get the snapshots with. I went into the zoo looking for this kind of shot, and sacrificed indoor shots, and elephants that were not at least 100 yards away. I got no giraffe shots, and I knew that going in, and I was ok with it. Due to its size I chose on this day not to carry any alternative lenses.
