You folks have got me really interested in this lens as I need the REACH and OS...seems it really sharpens up when stopped down.

But I need to shoot both dawn and dusk for these elusive, skittish deer...by 8am they're gone and they don't get back out till 5pm.

I'm hoping I can get decent images from high ISO's with a 50d or 60d.

But I'm thinking I may be asking way too much of this lens combo in this type of light... may have to change my plans and find a way to stalk them in better light or while bedded down or something...

What do you folks think...as I cannot afford a f/2.8 fast lens...yikes!

where are you at...where i'm located 5pm should give you plenty of light...if you're willing to bump the ISO to 1600 you should have no problems getting a fast enough shutter in most situations...how close are you able to get to them? even though it's a long lens...you still want to be relatively close...as close as you can get realistically

Hey Dre,

I'm in Hawaii.... The deer move under the cover of early morning and late evening...skittish buggers as they get hunted 24/7/365...;)

But I need to shoot'em with my Canon instead:lol:

I think with today's cameras [50d/60d] and their high ISO's I should be able to get decent images if you're thinking ISO 1600...that's what I wanted to know...i.e., what ISO should I may be successful at...Thanks!

I'll be shooting them anywhere from inside 200 yds to 30 yds.

Do you have any low-light images that I could view and see EXIF's?

I'm trying to achieve this task while on a budget so hence the 50d because it has MA and going with this lens over the Canon 100-400L.

Please shoot me a PM if you are able to help/discuss further as I don't want to clog this thread.

Thank you brother:D

here's some previous low-light shots...i'm on a 40D, so i try not to go above ISO 800...although i will if i have to

https://photography-on-the.net …p=13595465&postcount=2751
https://photography-on-the.net …p=10691155&postcount=1932

it looks like you'd be a couple hours before sunset...so depending on how much shade they're in you could be ok for light...is there any way of getting an idea of how much light you'll have by taking a picture of the area that they're in?

i mean this lens isn't fast by any means, but in order to get a fast lens you'll have to throw out tons of cash...so just don't be afraid to bump that ISO...and maybe bring a monopod for some more stability
