The price of this lens really is tempting...currently thinking of this or the Canon 70-300L to be used in daylight outdoors, for equestrian sports.

What is the equivalent mm range on a FF camera? I read somewhere it isnt "really" 150-500 in Canon terms, or something... and was actually 240-800 O_O but is that on crop?

Anyone who has used both lenses, can they say anything about the sharpness at 300mm on both lenses? Which is sharper? I would almost think the Sigma would be, since it is at the short end of the range rather than the long one, in its case, vs. the 70-300L.

Is it particularily heavy?

it's 150-500mm on a FF camera...i'd think the canon at 300mm will probably be sharper...the sigma is a good lens if you need the longer range...and it is heavy it's about a 1/3 of a lb heavier than the 70-200f2.8IS II

if you need 500mm, and are on a budget though, i don't think there's anything better...but if you have some more money to play with there are definitely other options if the longer reach isn't needed

Yeah, I don't need that much reach at the moment. 300mm is what I need :) Thanks for the response!

The Sigma lens got extensive use on a weekend with high speeds and long distances from the camera and subjects.

I've had three and all decent return for the money paid. Hard to resist given competition out there.

Just about to pull the trigger on this lens. Are there any issues using Canon 1.4 extender ?

Thanks
Ken

If you mean this teleconverter, (external link) it won't work. Canon teleconverters have an element that extends forward into the rear of the lens, and they work with only a limited number of lenses, (external link) and not even all Canon lenses. This limitation was established years ago.
