I kept the lens on Auto Focus 90% of time time, and it nailed focus almost every time, even through thicker brush. I was actually pretty surprised at how accurately and how fast it focused. I knew that it was a great lens, but this was something that I didn't expect. I thought I'd be using Manual focus all day, and instead was shooting perfectly with Auto. I don't know if that's the camera, the lens, or both, but yesterday everythign just worked great. I figured a lot of the shots would be a little OOF, but when I looked at them on the computer I found that only one short burst of frames was off.

Just received this lens from Sigma4Less (excellent prices btw). Snapped this Muscovy Duck in my front yard which couldn't have been more than 15ft away. They kept moving around and bobbing their heads so most came out blurry. Given the conditions though, this one pleased me. 500mm, f/8, 1/100sec, ISO 1600, and hand-held on my XSi (450D). Minor PP in LR2, no cropping. Full size image with EXIF attached is here

katodog Goldmember More info | Jan 23, 2009 08:30 | #516 Not a problem. Anyone is more than welcome to modify my pictures. I didn't process these, didn't see the need for it. Although I probably would have sharpened them a bit and tried to lighten around the head. Other than that I was pretty happy with the shots. katodog Goldmember More info | Jan 23, 2009 10:46 | #517 This is about as processed as I'd like, since I would prefer to keep the color as true as possible. However, there's nothing wrong with getting a "warmer" feel in the shot. It actually looks really good. Sharpened and saturation adjustment in PSP, and a little fill light adjustment in Lightroom.
Same shot over-sharpened to compensate for uploading. A little off for my tastes, but still a very pleasing image.
The good thing that shows from these types of photos is that you wouldn't be able to process without existing detail. That tells me that the lens is very capable of producing detail that may not show with other lenses. It makes it possible to process photos and get the best out of them, where otherwise they would be kinda boring or lacking in fine detail. 'Gazer...Geez, how close were you?? That squirrel must be used to people, seems like you got pretty close to it. If I had any sense I'd shoot some pics of the pet squirrel my folks have. But, that thing probably wouldn't stay still long enough. Davis (Fred)
