A couple of shots from my Sigma 150-500. The Wood Pigeon head is a 100% crop.

Dang - Looks like you got a sharp copy! Great bird shots! I almost went with the Bigmos, but ended up getting the 100-400L instead....That extra 100mm would be nice, especially when shooting little birds :)

I love my BigmOS, now that I am getting used to it. Here are a few I took the other day, and it was very overcast this day ( so lighting was dismal at best).

You're just up the road from me. I've got a shot from a couple of years back where a 'gator has a turtle caught in his jaws--poor fellow was too slow, I guess.

Yeah just across the State. I travel East a lot, to go Surfing. But I usually am in the Brevard area.

Wow, I just viewed this entire thread and the Sigma is capable of some fantastic shots, and at $580.00 cheaper than the Canon 100-400 it makes for a real tough decision for someome on a budget, looking for a long lens.

vincent23:

As someone who had this lens then sold it I can tell you the thing is WONDERFUL. Yeah, it's heavy but what lens of this length isn't. The IS is worth it's weight in gold. Only caveat is it NEEDS light. And like the weight, what 500mm lens that mere mortals can afford doesn't? ;)

If you have the cash and would really like a nice nature/wildlife lens you will love this beast. I will be getting another one and the only reason I sold the original one I had was I wanted a couple other lenses that I could use for business more than the recreational lens the Bigmos was for me...last part I will add is it took me a fair amount of practice to develop a feel for the thing. After that I am not sure I really ever missed many shots with it...and lemme tell ya if you practice shooting hummingbirds from close range at 500mm with this, every other subject will seem like it's in slow-mo... ;)

Hi to all,

There's one problem i can't solve. Everyone here has already seen pictures from that lens that weren't sharp, on POTN or elsewhere on the web. And i can't decide when pixelpeeping these shots whether it is the operator's fault or the lens' (bad copy).

Especially, just after the release of the lens, I saw very awful pictures but the lens was handled clearly by unexperimented people. Was the bigmo their first long lens ?

Very few post a crop of their shots, so thank you Artyman. Your crops are very impressive and if I was sure to get such a good copy, I wouldn't hesitate any more ! Because of a price of ~€900 here (that is ~$1100), i'd prefer not going the wrong way. For exemple, could RUSS-D post a crop of the duck's head in focus, please ?

The alternative for me is Canon 400/5.6 (great lens, but no IS) or Canon 300/4 IS+TC1.4x (IS, same length and aperture, but with a TC always on. Not so good, uh ?).

(i hope i didn't make too much english mistakes ;) )

If you're going to pixel-peep, this may not be your lens. I find it to be a very good lens, but I don't think it is optically in the same league as the 400 f/5.6. I suspect it to be close to the 300 with a 1.4tc though.

I find it to be a little less sharp than the 100-400 that I rented a year ago, but not by much.

It is a great lens for being fairly inexpensive with a good amount of range and native 500mm, with a very effective OS system. A tremendous value.
