Sigma is only putting the EX designation on lenses that have a constant aperture. The 150-500 is an EX lens in every sense of the word, just without having EX on the lens.

It is a better lens than the 50-500. The only reason to get the 50-500 over the 150-500 is if you need the 50mm.

tnx! will be on my shopping list! great for the tracks I'm sure... but the 50 - 500 doesn't have a constant aperture then why the EX?

Sigma only started using the constant aperture criteria for the EX designation in the last ~1 1/2 years. The 50-500 has been around since before they decided to do that.

what are the max apertures at certain focal lengths with this lens guys?
I have a 100-400, but I could always use more reach... How annoying is the 6.3 on the long end?

It's not that bad. You get used to the f/6.3, but more often than not I stop it down to f/8 for sharpness anyways. I only open it up to f/6.3 if I REALLY need that little bit of light.

It's a little annoying, but I get annoyed by f/5.6 too.

Any more birds in flight shots? I am debating between this lens and the Canon 100-400L lens for my 40D. I really would like to shot some birds and wildlife in my trips and I am on a budget.

If you're on a budget, it's pretty much decided for you!

You won't regret getting the Bigmos if you do end up choosing it.

Good ones, flyingfridge!! Loved #2 and the 100% crop is very sharp.
Which camera and workflow did you use?

Alex - thanks for your comments on the photos, glad you liked them.
The 1st image was taken with 450D, 2nd & 3rd with 5D.
Workflow is just converting from RAW, cropping, very small contrast boost and unsharp mask which I believe was something like 0.3, 120% so not much sharpening applied.
Main thing I think is not using a filter as at 86 it is tough to find a decent one!

I am convinced. After getting a 5D2, I will save up for this lens instead of a 100-400, and I will get other stuff from the money I can save. The 100% sold the lens. Great sharpness!

I'll also not get a filter for it. A normal hoya filter had an effect on sharpness for my 70-200 at 200mm, but not at 70mm.
