There was a thread some time back that I'm reasonably sure stated that T/Cs could be used with the Tamron 28-75. I'm wondering if the same is true of the 17-50. I want to travel light to Europe next year and a possibilty that crossed my mind was the 17-50 and a 1.4 or 2x TC. Any thoughts on how this would work? Originally I was thinking of just the 28-75 but that does limit the wide angle on a crop camera.

Thanks,

Hal55

Hal,,,I have a Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 and have tested my Tamron AF SP 1.4X TC (the white model) with it..The image quality is still very good even at 28mm..I don't see why it shouldn't work with a 17-50mm zoom..

BTW,,,IMHO the Tamron AF SP 1.4X TC is one of the best on the market,,,check it out..

Thanks for the reply - now for the subjective question if I may. The 28-75 plus 1.4TC is near as makes no difference to the 105mm of the 24-105L and I'd guess the Tamron plus converter is also about F4, so again line ball. If you can venture an opinion, would the combination be ball park, near enough or whatever to the IQ of the 24-105L?
Tamron plus TC is much lighter and way less expensive than the L glass and it could be an option I'd seriously consider.

Thanks,

Don't bother..you're talking of going to a 70mm lens....take 2 steps forward. The image degredation will be severe on a short lens like that. TCs are designed for telephoto lenses.

I've noticed that not all lenses can use AF with a TC, although the open aperture would allow for it. For example the EF 50 macro can't AF on my camera with the 2x TC, it just hunts forever. So before you get the TC I'd recommend you try it whether your camera + lens + TC work together. Since this may change between camera models, someone would need the exact combination you have.

My advice would be to get a medium tele instead, like the 100 F/2 or the 135 F/2.8. These don't weigh much, have great IQ and a much wider aperture (think bokeh) than an F/2.8 lens with an 2x TC and are not that much more expensive...

Discovery is not accidental. We discover only when we make ourselves ready to receive and photographers seek discovery by mastering their craft. But it begins somewhere else. It begins with daisies, kids, awful scenes, falling in love, or growing old. It begins with that which matters to you. And it ends with visual statements that express what matters to you about these things. It is not sight the camera satisfies so thoroughly, but the mind. - Christian Molidor
