Which do you use on your monopod? Ball head, flip head or no head? I use a ball head because sometimes I rest my monopod against a fence, tree, building, etc. at an angle.

I have a Slik Quick Pod. It has a top ( not really a head ) that can go 90 degrees to either side. Or if you turn it, front to back.

i use a 3229 tilt head. with the RC2 plate mounted long ways on the tripod mount of my 100-400L i can quickly tilt the lens up and down, and i use the tripod mount to switch camera orientation.

i use my monopod alot to shoot down into a lagoon and the tilt head makes it much easier.

Kirk MPA-1

The Kirk MPA-1 is a Manfrotto 3232 Monopod Swivel Tilt Head with a Kirk quick release installed.

It allows me to use Arca Compatible accessories including a Really Right Stuff 30D L-Plate. This L-Plate places the camera directly above the monopod shaft, instead cantilevered of off-side, which greatly increases the stability of the combination.

Since my tripod is equipped with an Arca Compatible Q.R. system, I wanted that type of system for my monopod. I seldom remove the lens plates from the tripod rings of my long lenses and often shoot my 30D while the L-Plate is still mounted.

I voted for flip - Im assuming you mean a tilt head.

I bought a cheap pod from jessops and it came with the head (permanently attached) so dont really have a choice!

Ball head - I don't always use it with lenses that have mounting rings and I'm likely to want to tilt the tripod and the camera in different directions.

I tried a 3232 with a RRS clamp on with my 500f4 and found it totaly crap, now I just have the RRS clamp on the pod and works great.

I have the Manfroto 680B Monopod w/322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head and 322RS Electronic Shutter Release. The cable for the 40D is coming. This setup puts your thumb on the shutter button as you grip the ball head handle.

Jeesh, I can't image the train wreck that would ensue with a ball head on a monopod (and Quick Release Plates). . .

A lot of the decision whether or not to use a 'flip head' like the 3232 will depend on the size of the glass you are mounting on it. I use one with a 200 f/2 and it is fine but I wouldn't use it if I had a 400 f/2.8 or longer glass.
