I have a lightweight ballhead. It gets the job done and I only got it because I underestimated the capacity for my tripod ballhead (got a bigger one for the tripod, moved the original to the monopod).

I think the new RRS swivel clamp is where I'm headed, personally. The old Manfrotto standby is a good solution also.

Depending on what/how you shoot no head at all is best, but with a QR clamp at least.

The only lens I need it for is my 80-200 and it has a tripod mount to shoot vertical.

I actually use all three of the options depending on what lens Im using and what Im shooting.
