I am sure this has been discussed before, bear with me.

Please recommend a good insurance .. maybe tell me how much you pay and what you get.

I am looking for insurance to cover things like.. someone trips over my equipment and gets hurt

i got a quote from state farm for 300,000 in liability, and 17,5k in equipment for $300 a year. they said it could not be combined w/ my home owners or auto since it was business.

also if you are making little or no money, you can get a rider on your home owners, that is fairly cheap.

I've got business insurance up to $30,000 which covers the items that I use in my business (office equipment, camera gear, computers, etc.). Under $300 per year.

Holy Cow! My $2 Million liability policy through Hill & Usher also covers $25,000 in equipment and a ton of other stuff, and is 1/3 those prices. It is specifically written for photographers. Be advised some homeowner's policies may cover your equipment, but if you are earning $$$ with your gear, things might get sticky if you ever have a claim. I have one of the best insurance companies around, and they specifically rule out gear used to earn money.

I agree. I pay about $800 a year, and it includes similar coverage but it also includes workers compensation insurance for me and up to 10 employees (liability through Selective, workers through Safety). Anything over $1,000 seems like a lot, or maybe includes some other clauses which might increase the costs.

Comparing policies is like comparing cars.

David: My car cost $25K
Joe: OMG, mine only cost $15K!

Who got the better deal? Dunno.

Like cars, insurance has different options, deductibles, limitations, exceptions, and so on. Really hard to evaluate two policies unless they are side by side, exclusion to exclusion, etc.

I've got $1M/$3M liability, $85K equipment, and studio coverage for $800. But I'm sure there are some limitations that others may or may not have. Its important to make sure you have your specific requirements listed, then shop around those requirements to get the best price. But unless you shop around with the same requirements, its hard to compare one policy against the next and get anything meaningful out of it.

The most important part is having some to begin with!

I went through State Farm and insured around 20K of equipment and also have liability. It Includes all my business equipment (MAC Pro, moniter, desk etc...Somewhere in the ballpark of $780. I have been adding stuff, so I need to send them an amended list. I recently joined PPA and one of the affiliate vendors looks very reasonable, so at renew time I will definitely do a hard compare.
