What are advantages in becoming a member and, as only a hobbyist, can I become a member?

CPS CPN is available to equipment owners online.

Two professional cameras, they decide what's 'professional' and three lenses.

Advantages are country dependent. At least one gets prioritized service with service turnarounds within the week. Standard service is normally a three week minimum. Usually a 10% discount may apply or a minimum service charge regardless of damage.

Other services are available to professionals where these services are offered; loaner gear, free loaner during service, sport meeting service centers, designing consultations, early offers, special offers, and in some cases new product development and early product placements.

In the USA there are no equipment requirements.

You must make 51% of your income from photography.

I was with NPS originally, had sent them all the records, tear sheets, client list and payment records.

I was accepted by Canon CPS with just one Canon camera, one lens and one flash ~ but on the strength of having been a Nikon Professional. :)

Not contradicting you, it is a professional service, that was just me. :)

51%......What if you have no income sans Social Security?

Were I to sell a $20 image and that would be my only income.

They have changed this. I have highlighted in bold the changes. Please note the required amount for each section. I have the updated CPS USA membership application, if anyone needs it just PM me.
This is all CPS USA requires. They do not require certain equipment; in fact there is a space for Nikon on the gear checklist.

I. WORKING PRESS: (2 or more are required)
• Three tear sheets of work published within the past year.
• A copy of current press credentials.
• A letter on letterhead from editor or bureau chief stating your staff or contract position.
• Web Site Address (with link to images)

II. FREELANCE: (4 or more are required)
Canon understands that this is a broad category encompassing many different fields of photography. Therefore, please provide us with any four of the items listed below that best illustrates your particular field of photography as proof of eligibility for CPS.

III. COMMERCIAL / STUDIO: (3 or more are required)
