experiment with placement, the first doesn't even look like you used an off-camera flash, and the second has a flash flare and a lurk-flash.

To further elaborate (how many flashes are you working with?), for the first I would have put one flash on the coping to the right of the camera, projecting onto the subject, and the other inside the bowl somewhere hidden and out of the way, just to illuminate the spot. That's the main problem with taking bowl photos, is that the deck and coping will be lit up but the inside won't be. For the second, I woul'dve kept that flash where it is, maybe moved it over to the left by 10 feet just so it is out of the picture and angle it accordingly. Then I would've placed one directly diagonal to it which would be to your right, right at the coping. That way the skater is slightly rim-lit, but he is still lit from the front.

Remember to keep your horizons straight and your lurkers elsewhere. :)

Haunt - Nice efforts. I might think about some sort of GoBo on the first one, to minimize the flash spillover onto the apron around coping.

Haunt,

GoBo's, etc., are sort of iterative. You put one in place, try it to see what impact it has on your shot, and if you don't like it, you move it up, down, in, out, or get another one of a different size or shape. How high you put your flash usually is determined by how you want your shadows to look.

Have you spent any time here?:

Here's an interesting one:

And another about GoBo's and snoots:

You could (and maybe we all should) spend hours and hours on the Strobist site. There is a ton of cool stuff and I, for one, find it endlessly fascinating.

Good luck, and have fun!
Dennis
