Tripod Ring for 70 to 200 F4 ?

I have this lens and I was wondeing if anyone uses a tripod ring. I just finished a night shoot and spent 9 hours using a tripod. I have the 488 RCC ball head and even though its a good ball head,I am wondering if the tripod ring for this lens is a good investment.

Sure, why not. I have one for mine even though I don't use it much. If I am going to be spending several hours shooting I will use the ring with my monopod. For normal use I just handhold it.

I got a $30 ebay knock off. Only complaint is that the mark to level it is off, but no big deal.

I really did not think I need the triopod ring but after the last shoot. It will come in handy. I love ebay knock off *LOL*

Ring stays on mine all the time.

I also leave my "knock off" tripod ring on my 70-200 f/4L all the time. I think it does sit nicer on the tripod with it.

Does anyone know if the knockoffs will take an RRS A-S plate?

I just got one for mine thanks to a fellow POTN'r and I am SOOOO glad I did! My tripod isn't a top of the line model so the lens was heavy enough to move the camera when it was set portrait orientation... Now I don't have to worry about that any more!

Actually you may want to look again at your tripod. if you can see it move, then you have orders of magnitude more movement than you want. The vibration that kills your images are on the order of 100um or so.

Thanks for the information. My tripod works for my needs, I haven't had any problems other than the one issue I mentioned above. I'm also not made of money so I have to make do with what I have. I haven't had any issues with blurry images except by my own inability and mistakes. But again Thanks for the information.

I thought about the tripod ring for mine, but it's just not in the works financially right now. Figgin' $100+ for it... forget it.

The knock offs are much less and still work fine.

I also think that having the tripod ring is advantageous.
I had planned to get the ebay knock off one, but now I see that they have the $40 one with the angled groved knob ( not the knurled one that is straight or purpendicular ) and another one for $16 that looks just like the $40 one. I wonder if they are the same?

I also leave mine on all the time. Mainly because I do a lot of early morning / late afternoon low light photography where tripod use is essential. Camera balances much better on the collar than having the lens hanging off the camera, and consequently reduces vibration = sharper images.

I was looking on ebay. I noticed the angled ones are for the 70-200 IS and the straight one is for the regular 70 to 200 . I just ordered it on ebay. Thanks for all of your help !!!
