I am considering a couple of options and I keep coming back to the sunpaks. Can anyone tell me if the little green port on the front of the foot is a standard pc sync port? I use the V2s trigger that have the option of connect to the flash with a sync cord.

Also, are the 383's strong enough to use in a studio, shooting thru an umbrella?

The little green port on the front is the light sensor. Don't stick anything in there.

It has a sync socket on the side. It's a bit longer than a standard 3/32 sub-mini plug. If you buy the flash new, it comes with a sync cord that plugs into that port and has a male PC connector on the other end. It will connect to any PC socket, including the Cactus receiver.

If you somehow acquire a Sunpak 383 without a sync cord, http://flashzebra.com (external link) has some adapter cords that will work.

The sync port on the 383 is not on the front. I think you are looking at the light sensor used for "traditional auto" mode.

The sync port is on the side and it is marked "sync".

It is an obtuse version of the subminiphone plug, but a standard subminiphone plug will not work.

Enjoy! Lon

Seems we have been to this movie before (green hole deal).

Well! I'm glas I asked!! I haven't actually had my hands on one yet, so I was going off of pictures...

Curtis, I read that you use these flashes for weddings, are they suitable for small home studio portraits as well?

I've also seen a few Sunpak PZ 5000AF flashes as well, but I couldn't find that they had a sync port, and I want that option available.

Examples of what two Sunpak 383's can do when bounced off umbrellas with a basic setup. These were triggered through hotshoe adapters connected by PC cords, which work well when you've worn out the sync jacks at the base of the strobes. :)

Will the male end of the included sync cord fit directly into a Pocket Wizard?

I quit shooting weddings and only do nekkid chicks now.

Just kidding. Actually I have never shot a wedding.

But the Sunpak 383 is a powerful unit that works nicely with an umbrella for individual portraits. It's a great bang-for-buck flash for those that can't justify the cost of the pricey Speedlites.

Light is light. I use 383s for wedding receptions, I modified them to suit me better.

LOL, same here. They're cheaper (and just as good for my purposes) than buying several 580 EX's... I actually started with two 580 EX flashes originally, but sold the second one and replaced it with a couple of Sunpak 383's (and kept the change! :D).

Tim and Curtis are often confused. But Curtis is the one that is left handed.

Enjoy! Lon
