I am looking at some CF cards. I need one or two backup cards. I have the Sandisk Extreme III that I use all the time , and it usually is plenty enough...but I need one or two more to throw in my bag, just in case.

Does anyone have a brand they can recommend?

caroleigh,
For 6+ years I have only used SanDisk and never had a problem.

Why not stick to the brand you have, that works? ;)

LOL.... Thanks. I've never used any other brand, this is why I asked. Looks like it's another sandisk...

So my next question, I mostly shoot youth sports, is an Ultra II sufficiant enough as a backup or do I need to stick with the extreme III?

Too much Sandisk man-love here for my liking. I have NEVER heard anything bad about Kingston or Lexar cards, also I have VERY rarely heard anything bad about any make at all, so make what you will of that. IMO, anyone who seriously worries about losing data from a solid state memory device is barking up the wrong tree - you have far more chance of dropping the whole camera + card off a cliff or into a big puddle than you do of losing data from a reasonable quality memory card.

How often do you shoot more than your entire buffer full of shots in under the time it takes to clear the buffer? Honestly.

In addition, seeing as I am in an antagonistic mood, how many people are going to chime in with their 1p worth about Sandisk cards on a thread where the title specifically says please don't mention Sandisk?

Lexar and Kingston also make great CF cards. I had one 4GB Sandisk Ultra III CF card malfunction within 3 months of purchase. The problem is that when it was filled with about 1GB of data, it would freeze and not accept more. The usual reformatting and using Lexar's Rescue software didn't work, so I got a return authorization from Sandisk. Sandisk agreed that the card was defective and sent me a brand new one.

Personally, I would buy a CF card from any one of these three manufacturers. Price would be the deciding factor. Sandisk makes good cards, I just had a bad one. I don't think that Sandisk makes a better product than the other two companies, they are all equally good.

bold comment to make, considering that two out of the three kingston CF cards that i bought for my S400 back in the day were useless within a year. first they started corrupting images, then they eventually were unable to be read. i have friends who use and trust kingston, but getting two lemons from them have turned me cold to that brand.

solid state memory like any other electronic device, is prone to failure. don't assume that flash memory is faultless simply because you've never lost data because of it.

(i'm not promoting any brand or trying to bad mouth kingston in particular. just my personal experiences with the brands.)

I use Sandisk Ultra II and nothing else. Haven't even moved up to the Extreme III.

i'd get at least extreme III and at least 4-gig cards. i use 8-gig cards myself.
