I have not shot a ton of sports, but with the eldest playing I'm shooting softball for the first time this year. The team is getting better, and I think I'm getting some more of the action. 8U is easy due to the slow speed but hard due to the very sporadic action.

C&C are welcome. Thanks!

Nice. Just a couple of points:
#1: Nice face, but no action (other players or ball).
#2: Nice face and ball, but there seems to be something odd about the exposure, as if an on-camera flash was used straight on.

Agree. Look at the catchlights.

Someone should show her where to put her foot when playing first. She and a runner are going to have a nasty tangle with that foot there.

I'm working on it. This is why they have the orange bag for the runners though (see below shot). Still - she needs to get her foot next to the bag.

Thanks for the comments, in reverse order....

#2 - The sun was at my back at about 7:00PM - she's just lit full but a low sun.
#1 - It's a struggle to get action / close plays in 8U.....for a reference the yellow team got five put-outs in five innings. The rest K's.

How about this....it's the next shot in the sequence (follows the earlier one by about a half second).

As shown softball has a seperate bag for the runner so foot position differs than in higher level baseball, at that age you're lucky to catch the ball let alone have the footwork down! 10+ you can work on that, right now it's the other little things like covering the bag, breaking on the hit, using two hands, etc. - can't count the times I've seen a throw to first with the little kids (8u) and they are not covering or doing the simple little things, let alone stretching with proper foot work! I'm still working on that with my 10th grade JV baseball players! Often at the younger age they just wait to catch it and then run to the bag to tag, the fact she's at the bag and in the position she is shows promise if you ask me...

#1 - not all good baseball/softball action shots need the darn ball or other players, in fact MOST do not and are "standard" like this one of leading off, follow throughs, etc. The shot is fine and has action, though not peak, it's still action of leading off.

#2 - can easily tell that's the sun and not flash, the ball helps in this one but baseball/softball is a sport where the ball won't be present 95% of the time unless you're focusing on a pitcher....that includes LL, high school, college, and pro baseball.

Exposures can use a little tweaking but overall they look good IMO, DOF is good, and action is just fine at what it is in these.

I really appreciate your comments MJ, and if you want to elaborate on the exposure I'm all ears. I try for bright and sharp images, but sometimes (often) I see at least one color channel pile up on the right side. I know I am blowing at least that color, but if I expose to keep all color channels from blowing it seems like the shot is dull, drab and underexposed. All ears....really!

A couple other notes. In the first shot I posted the girl is actually leaving the bag at the hit.....leadoffs are not allowed since it is a machine pitch at this level.

Finally....here is one more. I kind of like this one for the scoop throw sequence from short. OTOH the face is very partial and I wonder if I'm prejudiced to like the shot because this is my daughter. What do you think of this shot?

I do like this shot. A little different angle might have been a little better, but this works. Nice job!
