Well I was having my coffee this morning and flicking through the paper of one of my work colleagues. A paper I never normally read I am glad I did this morning though as I found one of my photos.

I phone the picture desk to advise them that they have used one of my photos when permission was not given by me.

I gave them all my details and he went and spoke to his boss. They apologised and said they would send me out a cheque for the picture.

I found this very unusual as normally you would have a fight on your hands.

When you're caught, you're caught.

Hope you squeezed them a little for using it without permission in the first place.

As an aside...how did they get the photo?

I have worked with many magazines and newspapers in England.
They have always been fair and always pay if they run one of
your pictures. Who knows how they found that picture, just
remember newspapers are fast paced they don't always follow
up on who to pay until you contact them.

I have had this happen to me.....but many times they tell me no we did not run it......just as it is in plain sight on the paper. Congrats on your paid published work!

I can't speak for how things are done in England, but I'm a pretty fast-paced guy myself. I guess the next time I need something I'll just STEAL it and make it incumbent on the other party to find me for payment.

It was in The Sun today. They apparently got it from the band. Looks like they just did a search for images of them and stole mine :)

I have had plenty of work published by the paper but was just a little annoyed that they used it without my permission.

Here is the picture: (its not even that good compared to the rest of the set)

sounds like a good business plan to me:
If you ask first then you have to pay every time. If not, then you only have to pay for maybe 5% of the images you use.
Its even more attractive if you only pay the going rate when you are caught.

Always happy to hear some critique

The paper i work for will often ask for courtesy photos if they were not able to get a photog out to the event or if we run a recap on something small. We will then ask the people involved (band in this case) if they have a photo we can use to run in the paper. If the band gives us images, we assume that the band has permission to run them. I am glad they are paying you with out a fight though.

Maybe you can use that to get some paid assignments from them?
