That would be the model, but it's what they call MagFiber, not Carbon Fiber. I've looked at them and I really don't think you save all that much weight with them compared to the price premium you pay.

How much weight savings is the MF? does the MF have all the dampening characteristics of say a CF tripod. If i am going to spend 450 on a MF tripod, why not spend a little more for a Gitzo? Please talk me out of the gitzo.

I figure for buying a cheaper tripod, I can buy a 1.4 TC and a couple filters for what i would spend on a Gitzo.

What is weight savings from the 055xbpro, to say a MF tripod?

I wouldn't know why...

There are a few alternatives to the Manfrotto MF models though.
I've read some favourable comments on Velbon El Carmagne tripods on POTN, and off course there are the Gitzo knock offs.

Some threads: One, two, three, four.
Some more threads: One, two, three, four, five.
Search is a nice tool ;)

I have a Manfrotto Carbon One monopod, and it's okay. But it's no comparison to a Gitzo IMO. Also because I prefer twist locks.

The had a 055MF3 for several years. It is a nice set of legs but for CF it is heavy. It does a good job as an alternative to the old Gitzos (before ALR and g-locks).

I now have Gitzo legs. In my opinion, there is a major class difference between the 055MF series and the comparable 2 series Gitzo.

yeah, I have read I think every tripod thread out there. I had my self convinced to get a 2 series or a 3 series gitzo carbon fiber. Buy it once and you are done..... but it is 900 dollars. I can do that, (i am selling some high end audio equipment to pay for this) and i want to get a couple more pieces. That tripod will limit me on what other stuff i am goign to get. The biggest lens i have now is the 70-200 f2.8 IS and might get a 100-400 in the future. So the tripod has to handel that. Will 2 series or 3 series (gitzo) work with that kind of weight, i mean which one is better.

I use Manfrotto because I mainly shoot in the studio or controlled locations - in those circumstances tripods like the 055xpro are ideal as they are solid, heavy, versatile and have loads of great features.

Gitzo are by far the best when it comes to CF/lightweight tripods designed to be rugged and easy to carry & set-up - if these are the characteristics you're looking for then paying the extra for a Gitzo is definitely worth it.

I'm using a Gitzo 2-series (GT2540) with a 5D and those two very lenses...it handles them without any problems (but that's probably the limit for the 2-series per Gitzo recommendations). The 2-series legset is anywhere from $525 to $575, depending on the model. If you plan using a 400L/5.6, then you'd need to move up to the 3-series.

I just weighed my Manfrotto 055MF4 with the Acratech head at 5.6 pounds and then read the specs of a Gitzo 3550 with a RRS BH-55LR ball head at 5.8 pounds physical weight. The Manfrotto is rated at a load of I think 15.5 pounds which is right in the ball park of what I was looking for but if I were to want a little heavier I might as well go for the heavy Gitzo and RRS BH-55 head. Wheeeeooouuu, lota money though, I think my Manfrotto is just fine!

The Gitzo 2540 and the RRS BH-40 head is listed at 4.1pounds physical weight, that's pretty decent considering. They are replacing that tripod with the 2541 which I guess comes out about now as a replacement.
