The head and body will move back and forth just a bit. If you hold the body of the flash and move it around, you can hear a small *clunk* as the head shifts. The flash fires fine and tilts & swivels where it should. - Keith

OP here - My 580EX-II is not loose like my 430EX is. That is what makes me think the 430 has an issue ... - Keith

My 580EX-II is not loose like my 430EX is either. 430EX has 2-3mm play front to back 1-1.5mm play left to right.The 580EX-II has no play to speak of. Canon 5D Mark II & Canon 7D
