I just bought a 430EX. The flash head is a bit loose at the swivel joint. The head and body will move back and forth just a bit. If you hold the body of the flash and move it around, you can hear a small *clunk* as the head shifts. The flash fires fine and tilts & swivels where it should.

Is all of this normal or do I have a bad one?

Both my 430 and 580 are a little loose, so I think it must be normal. They have never actually "moved" by themselves on me, so I would not be overly worried.

I think it's normal, mine is the same way,- it's not loose per se, just not snug tight, can flex a bit.

Mine is the same. I don't think it's a problem.

OP here - My 580EX-II is not loose like my 430EX is. That is what makes me think the 430 has an issue ...

Hmmm ...

Do you still need to press the button to move the head?
If so, then cool. SO long as the lock engages...nothing to worry about

I have the 580EX, my dad has the 430EX. The 430 is definitely "looser" and cheaper-feeling than the 580. It's not an issue if it works.

My 580EX-II is not loose like my 430EX is either. 430EX has 2-3mm play front to back 1-1.5mm play left to right. The 580EX-II has no play to speak of.
