I am thinking of purchasin the elinchrom dlite 4 to go kit. I have been offered one for $950 new but the newer version has cooling fans for $200 extra. Is it worth it? I would be using them for product and portraiture. Also when I did my course something was attached to the hot shoe of my canon 5d to set off the other flashes. I see there are so many different radio triggers and sets, what is the basic one that I would need?

if you're doing a long session, you'll have to take a five minute break every hour.

get some pocket wizards, or elinchrom's triggers.

Various radio triggers available:

Bowens Pulsar
Pocket Wizards
Elinchrom Skyports
Cactus/Ebay triggers

To name some of the more popular ones. Skyports are probably the best bet with your lights especially if you're going down the RX route of triggers and lights...

The problem with the D-Lite's that are not fan cooled is that once you put them in a softbox, octabox or strip box you're likely to have issues with overheating. Those kits are sold with umbrellas and that is how they are best used.

I've heard of one or two cases where the strobes were not in enclosed modifiers and occasionally overheated but I think that is rare. If you know or suspect you'll be using boxes then I would opt for the fan cooled units and not have to worry about the problem.

Personally, I would hate to be in the middle of a shoot and have to take a break or breaks to let the temperature come down on my strobes.

No problem with my non fan cooled lights with moderate use but I would take the one's with fans.

Using snoots etc will require fans. You may want to trade them down the line too. Better resale value.

Having fans means you can push them hard - no coffee breaks!

I have a set of the older fanless Elinchrom D-Lites (albeit the D2s not the D4s) that were sold with with softboxes as opposed to umbrella's; my personal experience is that I have not once had them reach their thermal cut off. I have done several shoots of many hours durations using them with no problems whatsoever.

Admittedly this is possibly because they are of a lower power rating than the D4s, but I would suggest that taking a 5 minute break in an hours shooting (if the lights require it) is a good idea anyway - your model is likely to burn out at that rate long before your lights.

I was thinking of getting a D-Lites 4 package(probably B&H). Will they have the cooling fans? Is there any way to tell now days? I read a little on it a few months ago and there did not seem to be any way to tell with out getting your hands on them.
