Protecting equipment from the heat

I have my first event shoot today and the temperature is supposed to be 94 degrees with a heat index of 97.

I have about a 45 minute drive to the location which will be indoors, but I am worried about my equipment while traveling. I have a SUV with pretty good air (knocking on wood now ) but I am still worried about keeping my equipment cool enough.

I have a Canon Rebel (taking my film camera as a backup) and a brand new Macbook.

The cameras are in a nice padded case as is the laptop. Do I have reason to be concerned and if so what do you suggest I do?

Getting a last minute case of the jitters!! :o

Keep the ISO as low as possible because the heat will add noise. Over all though I expect the camera will hold up well. I would be more worried about the photographer than the camera with the weather that hot this early in the season.

I keep all my gear in my car whether the temperature outside is 10 or 100 degrees and I've never had any problems. This is the third hot season I've left my little plastic Rebel XT in my car with 90-110 degree temperatures, and so far so good. I understand your concern, and a lot of people here would say you have every reason to be concerned, but I would have to disagree there.

Thanks for the reassurance SBCmetroguy. I'm in Nashville and spent some time down your way and you get about what we do weather wise, with a bit more humidity.

It's the plastic rebel XT that I have as well. I am thinking it will be okay as it's an hour at most travel time (allowing for traffic and getting lost, which I am sure I will do at least once!!)

I lost an external hard drive by leaving it in the car on the first day it was really hot, for about 2 hours, a few years ago. I am just really paranoid.

Stocky- Thanks for the ISO advise. Since I will be shooting inside with continuos lighting and speed light on a strobo frame I was planing to shoot at 125. Will do some test shots when I get there.

I, too, am worried about the photographer in this heat!!! It's been 10 degrees higher than normal for this time of year for several days and the rest of the week is forecasted to be the same if not worse. I am very heat sensitive as well.

Just got back from a run to get some last minute items and I am soaking wet!!
May take a change of clothes with me and wear my tackies for driving and setting up, then change as I cool down.

I am pretty prepared, but I've got 5 hours until I have to hit the road, so doing checks on all equipment and packing up.

Thanks for the advise!!

Should have no issues. Just make sure you are keeping the gear near you, don't leave it in the hot car. If I do take equipment with me and I have to leave it in the car, put it all in a large cooler with one pack of ice to keep the temperature under what's outside. It works well. I keep the gear in the bag and then in the cooler.

Not an issue since the film days. I leave my stuff in the truck all the time, up to 108 last summer. Just keep it out of the direct sunlight.
