Here are some shots from a small private school my son attends. All shots are taken with a S1 IS. I now have a 40d and am looking forward to next season.

This is a credible effort from a P&S. Obviously the ghosting and blur are results from the combination of low ISO, slow lens and limited flash power. The 40D will give you a better opportunity...though if you are serious you may wish to get a fast prime before next season so that you can shoot indoors without flash.

Some specific comments:

#1 - shoot tighter and in portrait orientation. I would lose almost everything from this but the two boys in the center.
#2 - Lose the half - kid on the far right and the dead space on the left.
#3 - Pretty much the same as #1.

Thanks for the CC Jeffrey. I left pic #1 and #3 minimally cropped to show the basket. Here are the same pics cropped per your suggestion. I like #1 and #3 better; the action is isolated with no distraction but the crop on #2 eliminated the line where he is trying to save the ball from going out of bounds.

much better on the cropping. Add an 85 1.8 to your bag and you will be much better off indoors!
