I just got a Manfrotto 680B monopod and i'm looking for a light head to put on it. Should i go for a ball type? Any suggestions?

Any experiences with this one?

The Manfrotto 488RC2 is a popular favorite.

That looks nice, but a little more than i wanted to spend. Would like to keep it under $50.

Actually, I just noticed you said monopod, not tripod. I'm not really sure what people use on their monopods, so this question is probably better suited for someone else. Sorry about that.

I use the The Manfrotto 486RC2. The 488RC2 is really overkill for a monopod, although great on a tripod.

I, too, use Manfrotto's 486RC2 on my 680B monopod. It's a perfect pairing in my opinion.

I use Manfrotto's 488RC2 on my most-used tripod, though.

This is a great solution for a monopod head.(I think. Ive actually never used it) It just swivels up and down your left/right is done with the monopod.

For some folks, the swivel head provides enough position adjustment on a monopod.

For folks who like to be able to use the monopod in many different positions and with or without lenses having tripod mount rings, the ball head provides the needed position flexibility.

Like Skip and Doc Klepper, I use a 486RC2 on my monopod; the 3229 tilt head doesn't give me enough freedom with lenses that don't have tripod rings.

the manfrotto 234rc is inexpensive and allows you to piviot on one plane, so i adjust it so i can piviot to portrait. since it is a monopod, i dont feel anything other than one plane is necessary.

I use no head on a monopod usually, but I almost always handhold my rig (griped 40d w/70-200 2.8 IS+1.4x and 580EX II taped to top of lens hood)

I recently moved from RC2 to A-S QRs....mostly RRS lever clamps/plates, etc.

On my old monopod I had used either a 3232 or 3229(now 234RC)....sometimes a 486RC2.

With the A-S system I first converted the 3232 to the RRS "Monopod Solution' http://reallyrightstuff.com/tripods/03.html (external link) On a whim, going to shoot some college baseball games, I mounted just the clamp on the monopod. I found, particularly with the 'L'-plate, that this worked as well....actually better....and I have stayed with that.

the ballhead in the OP is just too small and wont hold much weight
i got it for small stuff and once tried it on my monopod
i attached it on my gripped 40d + 80-200F2.8 and thought it was tight
the thing slipped and knocked me on my head

Do this
http://reallyrightstuff.com/tripods/03.html (external link)

or this

Both better than a ballhead.
