Depends upon your subjects...

As per Set Up Your Home Studio, a book by the "Yellow-Box People" (remember Kodak?) you need the following distances for studio shooting with a full frame camera. Just convert the to equivalent 1.6x focal lengths to get a rough estimate of space required.

50mm on F/F is close to 30mm on 1.6x (actually 31.5mm)
85mm on F/F is fairly close to 50mm on 1.6x (actually 53.12 mm)
135mm on F/F is fairly close to 85mm on 1.6x (actually 84.375 mm)

Camera to subject distance
Add a minimum of 1.3 M (4 ft.) behind subject and 1 M (3 ft.) behind camera to maneuver.

Head and shoulders portraits
50MM - 1.5 M - 5 FT
85MM - 2.5 M - 8.25 FT
135MM - 4 M - 13.25 FT
Full Length
50MM - 3 M - 10 FT
85MM - 5 M - 17 FT
135MM - 8 M - 26 FT
Group Portraits
50MM - 3.8 M - 12.5 FT
85MM - 6.5 M - 21.5 FT
135MM - 10.4 M - 24 FT

And notice the shooting distance for individual portraiture with the classic FL lenses used (for 35mm film shooting) falls within the range which I had listed in my earlier email...

Length:

1' for background stands and b/g
5-6' for separation of subject from b/g
2' for subject
8-10' for portrait shooting distance, camera to subject
3' for camera tripod
2-3' for photographer to stand behind tripod...

...equals 21-25'

Yes, Wilt, you were right.

Ok, I guess I can shoot, with some pain, a full person with 50mm with my 5D. Not so bad... :)

Thanks!
